Aaliyah
Aaliyah was an American R&B singer who was raised out of Detroit, Michigan. She was influenced by her mother who loved to sing. At the age of ten Aaliyah appeared on the show Star Search, which is how she first became recognized. A few years later her Uncle/Manager introduced her to R. Kelly, who helped produce and write Aaliyah’s debut album. In addition to singing Aaliyah was also an actress, she appeared in a few motion pictures, her most famous being Romeo must die. After her debut album she teamed up with Missy Elliot & Timbaland to produce the majority of her songs. As many of us know in the summer of 2001 tragedy struck. After recording the music video for her most recent hit “Rock the boat” Aaliyah and several members of the filming crew for the video died in a plane crash. There were no survivors and the plane crashed shortly after take off. This was devastating news for anyone who was a fan of hers. Believe or not, I even remember where I was when I heard the news. She is referenced often in the R&B/hip-hop scene with many artists making a reference to her in their lyrics. Though she tragically passed on at the young age of 22 her music will still be in the hearts of her fans.
