Notes
Though this is his debut album as a solo artist, Slowhand was a well accomplished guitar player by the time of it's release. The album includes several musicians as his backup band, notably most of the members of his last group, Delaney and Bonnie and Friends. The album contains two of his biggest solo hits, the cover version of J.J. Cale's After Midnight, and the finishing tune Let it rain. To me the back cover can be compared to The Beatles Lonely hearts club band album cover. There is a picture of most of the musicians who play on the record surrounding Clapton, then there is the same image with the members not included in which you can guess the members pictured.
Recommendations
If you are a fan of Clapton then you must own it. There are a few good tracks here that you can pick up on Greatest hits and box sets by Clapton, so if you are just a casual fan then you may want to pass on it.
If you plan on purchasing Eric Clapton
There are a couple different versions of this album that have been released. There is a deluxe two disc set that includes several bonus cuts, and then there is the original release remastered. I own to original remastered version, it sounds great and you get all the original tracks. If you are a die hard fan looking for some extra tracks then I would go with the deluxe version. You may find that you have no choice to go with the deluxe after all. It is hard to come by the original remastered version that I own. You can take a look at Cdnow.com and see if it's available, if not then you may have to shell out the extra cash for the extra tracks with the deluxe.
If you don't plan on purchasing Eric Clapton but want to hear some tracks from it
There were two big hits from this album, After Midnight, and Let it rain. You will for sure want these in your library. You may also want to check out my top 5 as well, since all these tracks are good too. You can preview or purchase these tracks at Itunes or Napster. Fore more suggestions check out my ideal compilation for Slowhand at my Eric Clapton Home Page.
