Nirvana

Nirvana, formed out of Seattle was one of the most influential band of the 90's and created a whole new genre of music. The band began in the late 80's by good friends Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic. They had common interests in music and wanted to form a band together. They had problems deciding on a drummer however. They went through several different drummers and didn't have their permanent man until after their first album was released. The new drummer and the man who completed the trio was Dave Grohl. Their first recording sessions cost roughly 600 dollars and was loaned to the band by Jason Everman. The band wanted to give him credit for all his help, so they gave him a credit for playing guitar, even though he never played a note on the album. After some minor success with their first album the band changed labels and recorded their second and breakthrough album Nevermind. The single "Smells like Teen Spirit" made the band famous over night. It seemed that all radio stations and people all over the word could not get enough of this song. Eventually the band began to sell out shows and became one of the most popular bands at the time. Drugs became to be an issue with the band and especially front man Kurt Cobain. Cobain was considered by many a genius, though some considered him and his band to be sell outs. When their third and final studio album was released long time fans of the band were expecting a poppy sound, but they band stuck with their roots and it defiantly had the grunge sound to it. One of the last performances by the band was their MTV Unplugged show. 5 months after the show was recorded tragedy struck the band and the music world. A week after sneaking out of a rehab clinic, Kurt Cobain, founding member of Nirvana and musical genius was found dead in his Seattle home. The cause of death was s self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head. There is a major controversy over the death of Cobain. Some believe that he was murdered, but in anyway, it was a tragic loss and was the end to Nirvana. Since then Dave Grohl formed his own successful band, The Foo Fighters, and Novoselic has played bass with several other bands. There have been some compilation releases since the death of Cobain. There was a lawsuit over the rights of the last studio recording of the band titled "You know you're right". The remaining members wanted to include the track on a box-sex of rarities and demos, however Cobain's former wife Courtney Love wanted the track to be included on a single disc including other Nirvana hits. After a long trial both parties got their wish when a single compilation disc simply titled Nirvana was released in 2002 and then the box-set released two years later.
