Steely Dan

Steely Dan is an American pop/jazz/funk band led by Walter Becker & Donald Fagen who peaked to their fame in the 1970's.  Becker & Fagen met in college and were in several bands, including one with comedian Chevy Chase before they formed Steely Dan.  Their original lineup consisted in addition to the duo, a few studio musicians and another vocalist, David Palmer.  The guys came up with the band title based on the name of a dildo in a novel titled Naked Lunch.  The band's debut was a commercial success, and kicked off one of few 1970's Steely Dan tours.  In the mid 70's Becker & Fagen were tired of touring and wanted to concentrate solely on their studio work.  The duo would make some great studio albums including the heavily jazz influenced Aja.  The band got into some legal problems after their label was bought out.  Becker's girlfriend has passed away, he was fighting drug addiction and was hit by a NYC taxi.  The duo decided to split for awhile and in that time Fagen released a solo album.  The duo eventually got back together and toured and released a couple more studio albums.  They are a complex band with deep sarcastic lyrics and fantastic studio work, they are truly perfectionist when it comes to their studio work.   As of 2008 the band announced a few dates that they will be playing live.
